Gajendra Malla / While others put up bird spikes, one lady opened her doors to 92 families of sparrows. The house belongs to Ms. Sabira Ranjit, who has allowed an extraordinary number of sparrows to make their homes within her house. Today, the house accommodates approximately 92 sparrow nests, making it an unusual and remarkable habitat for these small birds. She is an hotelier by profession, currently working with Aarya Hotel & Spa.

The number 92 is impressive, but each nest represents more than a number. Each one is a small home where sparrows build nests, lay eggs, raise their young, and continue the cycle of life. The unique house was discovered by Mr. Dhurba Basnet, a 72-year-old man who lives in Kirtipur. He is an activist, also known as Bhangera Baa. mr. Basnet’s discovery also highlights an important lesson: nature is often closer to us than we realize.

Sabira’s vision does not end with providing shelter to the sparrows. She is now preparing to open the house as a bed-and-breakfast (B&B), creating an opportunity for visitors to experience this unusual relationship between humans and nature. Soon, visitors may be able to stay at this unique B&B, breathe the fresh air, listen to the chirping of sparrows, and experience a living ecosystem from within a home.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from this house is simple: We don’t always have to go far to find nature. Sometimes, we only need to make room for it.
